Media and How We Communicate
- We live in the rearview mirror
- Media has been with us for a long time, even if we do not realize
- So, we basically are recycling old ideas and themes from past (rearview mirror)

Crash Course: Prejudice and Discrimination

- deliberate violence vs. accident
- race/ gender/ sexuality determine whether we get a job or get pulled over etc. due to prejudices
- prejudice: based off sex/ gender/ religion
- prejudice is not stereotyping or discrimination
- prejudice= attitude
- discrimination= behavior
- implicit association test= IAT
-determines stereotypical choices/ questions weigh discrimination
- can predict how discrimination works in broad social patterns
- overt prejudice is far from dead

-people on both sides of the stereotype tend to respond similarly
- these stereotypes are pervasive
- prejudices can come up to justify social inequalities
just-world phenomenon- happens when both sides of the power and wealth spectrum believe people get what they deserve, and deserve that they get
Ingroup/Outgroup Phenomenon- "us vs them"
- dividing into ingroups and outgroups drives prejudice and discrimination.
- there are benefits of communal solidarity
- safety in numbers
-the ingroup bias, or tendency to favor your own group at the expense of others, is powerful, even when it is totally irrational
- soon enough each group has inflated itself and derided the opposing group, even though the division between the two essentially meaningless to begin with

-malware is an intrusive form of spyware, computer software
-government uses malware to check in on citizens
-regulation not really a part of it/ hacking

- says they are proud to be used as law enforcement tool
-groups like this are selling their software to the worlds most brutal dictatorships

- no one sanctions them, or regulates any technological online traffic which Marquis-Boire says is the problem (no government regulation.

-no sane policy governing online/ software
