Media and How We Communicate

- We live in the rearview mirror

- Media has been with us for a long time, even if we do not realize

- So, we basically are recycling old ideas and themes from past (rearview mirror)

-Mass media: needs technology

- Burlesque/Vandeville

- live entertainment experience

- home of American pop music

- Jim Crow

- characters originates Black face

- ostentatious costumes

- added new elements of existing Burlesque entertainment and clown entertainment

-Plantation music: blues rock n roll

- permeated western music

- foundations of American entertainment built on Black slave culture

- African propaganda/ Anti Japanese


Crash Course: Prejudice and Discrimination

- Amadou Diallo

- deliberate violence vs. accident

- race/ gender/ sexuality determine whether we get a job or get pulled over etc. due to prejudices

- prejudice: based off sex/ gender/ religion

- prejudice is not stereotyping or discrimination

- prejudice= attitude

- discrimination= behavior

- implicit association test= IAT

-determines stereotypical choices/ questions weigh discrimination

- can predict how discrimination works in broad social patterns

- overt prejudice is far from dead

Corinne Moss Racusin

- science faculty across the country discriminated against female scientists, determined by a study

-people on both sides of the stereotype tend to respond similarly

- these stereotypes are pervasive


- prejudices can come up to justify social inequalities

just-world phenomenon- happens when both sides of the power and wealth spectrum believe people get what they deserve, and deserve that they get


Ingroup/Outgroup Phenomenon- "us vs them"

- dividing into ingroups and outgroups drives prejudice and discrimination.

- there are benefits of communal solidarity

- safety in numbers

-the ingroup bias, or tendency to favor your own group at the expense of others, is powerful, even when it is totally irrational

- soon enough each group has inflated itself and derided the opposing group, even though the division between the two essentially meaningless to begin with

-Cleveland: riots broke out for boys arrest intoxication

-targets of the state

-under constant surveillance

- dubbed as domestic terrorists

-George Zimmerman: Trayvon Martin's killer

-# BLM became an organization after Alicia Garza tweeted

-made a platform with Opal Tometi

-prison reform activist: Patrice Colors

-first move of Direct Action: Rodeo Drive

-Ashley Yates-Michael Brown shooting

-Law enforcement use social media for intel

-BLM used social media heavily for news

- officers have pictures of selective activist

-Automatic card readers, the sting ray used to watch protestors

-radical right dubbing BLM as the radical left, by reporters

- this put them under fire by the right

-BLM forced civil rights back into the political narrative, conversation


State Sponsored Spy Work

-malware is an intrusive form of spyware, computer software

-government uses malware to check in on citizens

-regulation not really a part of it/ hacking

-Moroccan Activism

- Samia Errazouki- Activist Journalist

-Moroccan authoritarianism

-Zineb Belmkadden- Activist Journalist

- mother of Zineb went to protest against Moroccan government, found by officers and told mother they were monitoring Zineb

- Zineb and Samia and a bunch of others received a suspicious email. The email claimed to have "leaked information"

-However, the link would lead to nowhere but a word document

Citizen Lab

- internet researchers focused on Freedom issues

-Morgan Marquis-Boire: researcher

-Bill Marczak: surveillance government focus

-email was a form of malware of spyware

-evidence suggested this was the Moroccan government

-found out sophisticated malware stemmed from

-Hacking Team were found out to be the source of the leaked email by Citizen Lab

-The team was openly advertising and selling hacking malware and systems


Hacking Team

-marketing head: Eric Ray

- says they are proud to be used as law enforcement tool

-groups like this are selling their software to the worlds most brutal dictatorships

-selling to where the money is

- no one sanctions them, or regulates any technological online traffic which Marquis-Boire says is the problem (no government regulation.

-sold to multiple agencies in the United States: Federal and Local

- pitched software: FBI, CIA

-no sane policy governing online/ software
